An alternative to Microsoft Purview Communication Compliance

Purview Communication Compliance is Microsoft’s tool for finding risky messages in Microsoft 365. Aftercomm does a similar job for outbound email, differently: an AI reviews the email sent from the mailboxes you choose against a policy you write, and tells compliance, HR or legal within minutes when one puts the company at risk, with the reason in a sentence.

Why teams look for an alternative

Licensing. Communication Compliance comes with Microsoft’s top-tier compliance licensing. A company on Business Premium or E3 that needs outbound email reviewed faces an upgrade across every seat, not a tool for the people it wants to cover.

Keyword matching misses what matters most. The emails that cost companies money rarely contain a forbidden word. “We’ve moved banks, please use the account below” is payment fraud. “She’s trying for a baby, let’s go with Mark” is a discrimination claim. “Saving my contacts before IT shuts off my access” is data walking out the door. Each reads as ordinary business to a keyword list. Aftercomm judges meaning, the way a sharp manager reading over a shoulder would.

Time to value. Purview policies take a specialist to build and tune. Aftercomm’s policy is plain sentences covering CFO, legal, HR and compliance concerns, written to keep false alarms low, ready on day one and yours to change line by line. You can see real verdicts on your own mail as soon as Microsoft 365 is connected.

When Purview is the better fit

If you already own E5 licensing, need Teams chat and other channels covered alongside email, or need everything to stay inside Microsoft’s compliance boundary, start with Purview. Many companies run both: Purview for retention, eDiscovery and supervision of regulated channels, Aftercomm for fast, plain-language alerts on the outbound email that creates risk.

Aftercomm is not an archive or a system of record. Firms with recordkeeping obligations (for example under FINRA or SEC rules) still need their archiving and supervision platform; Aftercomm adds a faster, smarter alert on top of it.

How Aftercomm works with Microsoft 365

A Microsoft 365 administrator approves two read-only permissions. Aftercomm then checks the Sent Items of the mailboxes you choose every few minutes, reviews each new email with Claude, from Anthropic, and alerts your reviewers when one is flagged. It never sends, changes or deletes anything, never blocks or delays a send, and Aftercomm never stores message content. Your Exchange admin can make Microsoft itself enforce which mailboxes Aftercomm may read.
